Rumors about a possible movie adaptation of Game of Thrones have been going round for over a year now, most based on statements from actors that were blown completely out of proportion. However, these very rumors sparked up again last month with a message that could not be ignored. Allegedly, George R.R. Martin accidentally let slip at a party that a movie is in the making, but without his personal involvement due to a lack of time. (He does have a couple of books to finish after all.)
As a fan of everything connected to A Song of Ice and Fire, the notion of a movie adaptation makes me absolutely giddy. That is, a well-executed movie that tackles story lines that have not made it into the TV adaptation (e.g. Robert’s Rebellion or Egg & Dunk). I’m certainly not the only out there to wish for more…
I hate to rain on your parades, but once again the rumor has proven to be false. There is no movie in the making. Martin took to his Livejournal to set the record straight:
❝I don’t know where this latest round of “there’s going to be a Game of Thrones movie” nonsense is coming from, but suddenly it is everywhere, and all of us connected with the show and HBO are being bombarded. But nothing has changed.❞
He writes that he still likes the idea of a movie a lot, but reminds everyone that it would be an extremely challenging feat and that HBO, as a TV business, is not u up for the task. He concludes with:
❝I am still writing The Winds of Winter. David & Dan are still filming season six. HBO is still in the television business❞
I think this teaches us a message not jump on the bandwagon too quickly and believe everything that is written in tabloids and on social media. The good news is that we still have a couple of books and seasons to look forward to!
Does the idea of a movie adaptation appeal to you, and if not, why? Tell me in a comment!
