❝ The adventures of writer Newt Scamander in New York’s secret community of witches and wizards seventy years before Harry Potter reads his book in school.❞
At long last I got to revisit the Wizarding World which I have come to love so much as a child and teen, and it was wonderful and everything I had hoped for. This Book Vs. Movie review is slightly different in the sense that there isn’t really a book plot to compare to the movie to, but I wanted to do a review anyway.
First and foremost, if you plan to go see Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, don’t go into the movie theater with the expectation that it will be another Harry Potter movie. I think many people who were disappointed had expectations similar to this. The only connection Newt and Harry have is the school book written by Newt that Harry will read during his time at Hogwarts. Thus, it’s best to see the movie as a different franchise.
I enjoyed the movie adaptation so much because it is a completely new story with new characters, all the while allowing you to enjoy the magic you know from Harry Potter. And despite the fact that there is scarcely a connection to Harry, other connections are made that especially people who have read the books will enjoy.
One example is that the opening title for Fantastic Beasts starts with Hedwig’s Theme until it morphs into a unique soundtrack. Other examples are that Dumbledore is mentioned in passing (and I kind of expect him to play a bigger part in the upcoming movies), spells are used that we know and mentions are made to well-known wizarding families.
In my opinion, the entire movie is made by the acting. Eddie Redmayne is perfectly cast as Newt and I truly can’t think of anyone who can play the character better. He brings out the humor and awkwardness of the character brilliantly, while also underlining Newt’s softness and emotions. Moreover, though most of the other actors were unknown to me, they surprised me pleasantly. The acting was very convincing overall. I’m very curious to discover more about their backstories in the upcoming movies.
Last but not least, the movie strikes a good balance between the serious underlying plot of an upcoming dark wizard and the humor, which is often provided by Newt’s beasts (kudos to the special effects and cinematography).
To sum it up, I implore you to see Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. It’s a wonderful movie with a an original plot, interesting characters and a beautiful soundtrack and cinematography.
